If there's one cosmetic active that has revolutionized modern dermatology, it's Vitamin C.
Decades of clinical research confirm it as one of the most effective ingredients for the skin: brightening, anti-aging, unifying, protective. Yet, most commercial products use it in unstable forms, insufficient concentrations, and formulas that nullify its effectiveness. Here's what you need to know to choose truly well.
What is Vitamin C and why does skin need it?
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid and its derivatives) is a water-soluble antioxidant essential for collagen synthesis. The skin naturally concentrates it in the dermis and epidermis, but cannot produce it autonomously—it must be introduced externally, both through diet and topical application.
Its functions in the skin are numerous and scientifically documented:
- Stimulates collagen synthesis — activates fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing type I and III collagen, which are most important for skin firmness and elasticity
- Inhibits melanogenesis — blocks the tyrosinase enzyme, responsible for melanin production, reducing spots, hyperpigmentation, and discolorations
- Neutralizes free radicals — protects cells from oxidative damage caused by UV, pollution, and stress, slowing down cellular aging
- Boosts SPF — when used in combination with sunscreen, it amplifies its antioxidant efficacy by up to 400%
- Brightens complexion — does not lighten the skin, but evens tone and restores natural radiance
The stability problem: why many products don't work
Pure ascorbic acid (L-Ascorbic Acid) is the most studied and most effective form—but it is also the most unstable. It oxidizes rapidly on contact with light, air, and heat, turning yellow-orange and completely losing its biological activity. A Vitamin C serum that has oxidized is not only useless: it can be irritating.
For this reason, formulation is everything. There are several stable forms of Vitamin C:
- Ascorbyl Glucoside: stable derivative, converts to pure ascorbic acid in the skin thanks to skin enzymes. Excellent tolerability, ideal for sensitive skin.
- Ascorbyl Palmitate: integrates into cell membranes, deep antioxidant action, particularly effective in synergy with Vitamin E.
- Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate: water-stable, effective against acne and post-inflammatory spots.
- 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid: one of the most advanced forms, high penetration, high stability, efficacy comparable to pure ascorbic acid.
In Divetta Milano products, we use stabilized and biocompatible forms of Vitamin C, selected based on the specific function of each product.
100% organic, 100% vegan: why it matters
Our Vitamin C comes from biotechnological fermentation or certified plant sources, without animal derivatives, without GMOs, without contaminants. Certified vegan and cruelty-free—because efficacy should never come at the expense of ethics.
The difference from commercial products
Mass-market products often contain pure ascorbic acid in transparent bottles (it oxidizes in weeks), excessively high concentrations (>20%) that irritate without increasing efficacy, formulas with overly low pH that cause redness, and synthetic fragrances that neutralize the antioxidant action.
How to use it: the correct protocol
Morning routine (preferred use):
- Cleanse face
- Toner or hydrating essence
- Vitamin C serum — apply 3-4 drops, massage gently
- Wait 60-90 seconds before applying the next step
- Moisturizer
- SPF is mandatory — Vitamin C boosts sun protection, but does not replace it
Powerful synergies
- Vitamin C + Vitamin E: classic antioxidant synergy, documented by decades of research. Vitamin E regenerates oxidized Vitamin C, extending its efficacy.
- Vitamin C + SPF: amplified antioxidant protection against UV damage.
- Vitamin C + Hyaluronic Acid: hydration and radiance in a single step.
How long before seeing results?
- After 2-4 weeks: brighter skin, more even complexion
- After 4-8 weeks: visible reduction of superficial spots, improved texture
- After 3-6 months: structural anti-aging action, improved elasticity, reduction of fine wrinkles
When to stop?
Vitamin C does not require cyclical breaks. Temporarily suspend if persistent redness appears, if undergoing laser treatment or professional peeling, or if the product has changed color to dark orange—in which case it is oxidized and should be replaced.
Our promise
At Divetta Milano, Vitamin C is not a trendy ingredient. It is an active chosen with scientific rigor, formulated in stable and biocompatible forms, in effective concentrations, in synergy with ingredients that amplify and protect its action.
Because radiance is not achieved with compromises.
